Power Counting and the Renormalization Group for an Effective Description of NN Scattering

چکیده
I outline the power counting scheme recently introduced by M. Savage, M. Wise and myself for the effective field theory treatment of NN scattering. It is particularly useful for describing systems with a large scattering length, and differs from Weinberg’s power counting. A renormalization group analysis plays a big role in determining the order of a given operator. Pions are ignored in this discussion; how to incorporate them is discussed in M. Savage’s talk .

A New Expansion for Nucleon-Nucleon Interactions
We introduce a new and well defined power counting for the effective field theory describing nucleon-nucleon interactions. Because of the large NN scattering lengths it differs from other applications of chiral perturbation theory and is facilitated by introducing an unusual subtraction scheme and renormalization group analysis. Calculation to subleading order in the expansion can be done analy...
متن کاملRenormalization of NN scattering : contact potential
The renormalization of the T -matrix for NN scattering with a contact potential is reexamined in a nonperturbative regime through rigorous nonperturbative solutions. Based on the underlying theory, it is shown that the ultraviolet divergences in the nonperturbative solutions of the T -matrix should be subtracted through ”endogenous” counter terms, which in turn leads to a nontrivial prescriptio...
متن کاملRadiation pions in two-nucleon effective field theory
For interactions involving two or more nucleons it is useful to divide pions into three classes: potential, radiation, and soft. The momentum threshold for the production of radiation pions is Qr = √ MNmπ. We show that radiation pions can be included systematically with a power counting inQr. The leading order radiation pion graphs which contribute to NN scattering are evaluated in the PDS and ...
متن کاملNN Scattering Problem
It is shown that chiral perturbation theory (in its original form by Wein-berg) can describe N N scattering with positive as well as negative effective range. Some issues connected with unnaturally large N N 1 S 0 scattering length are discussed. The chiral perturbation theory approach to the low-energy purely pionic processes [1] has been generalised for processes involving an arbitrary number...
متن کاملRenormalization group analysis of the chiral pion production operator for NN → dπ
We are interested in the consistency between the cutoff, chiral symmetry, and the power counting. For this purpose, we apply the Wilsonian renormalization group (RG) to an operator and then decrease the Wilsonian cutoff. As an example, we study the s-wave pion production operator for NN → dπ, derived in chiral perturbation theory. We find that the renormalized part of the RG effective operator ...
